There are many discourse communities people can be a part of. They can have some alike and some completely different. As for myself I have things that others and I have in common but at the same time don’t have any at all my convention in each community discourse are the ones that are most alike. I’m sure many other people have the same things for convention as well like text, emails, letters, blackboard and face to face communication between groups. The purpose for writing the discourse community is to show the similar and differences between each topic in each discourse community within my discourse community. Typical genres and media used between most groups is email and text, social networks and maybe even video calls. In my Discourse community I discussed being a student, family/friends and athletics. Within my discourse community I have being responsible and at the end successful, the conventions are very much alike, just like any other student here at UTEP. The differences are the type of student that each individual is everyone has their own way of performing as student. The language spoken obviously is English and if speaking to a bilingual speaker may have to speak Spanish as well. The difference between languages from each student is that everyone is different and everyone speaks different and unique languages. Depending on their traditions and customs the languages spoken will differ, but the common denominator is English that is the language of preference at school like I had mentioned before. In order to be a successful student we have to speak the native language of the land with correct grammar and punctuation. In my friends and family D.C the conventions are speaking to family and friends and the difference is obviously you speak to different members and friends then your peer would. The language spoken is English and Spanish, of course the difference is the way it is spoken or as we say the accent. As for me I speak in Spanish to all my family. Personal discussions between family member and friends are different to the daily life topics that most families and friends talk about. There is no other way texts or sent and receives by humans rather than text messages, letters, and emails. This discourse is not very hard to explain, each family is different in many way but family is family and friends are friends there are no other way to put it, yes everyone has different ethnic groups and religion but in this case I can relate to this discourse it’s something that every person has in common but in this case we are all Hispanic so this makes it a little more relevant between us, that is why I choose this community discourse. My final discourse is athletics. Yes we are not all in athletics in school but it was one of the things we all had in common we are all involved in some kind of sport weather in UTEP or some kind of recreational sport or activity. I participate in private city football leagues and also run and lift weight recreationally. In the athletics discourse each member uses words such as workout, practice. The same types of topics are discussed such as practice schedule, games, and workouts, but they can also be different for football they can be plays formations and other football terms. There are different guidelines and rules for each activity. The conventions are the same as to we speak to other athletes not just to the ones in the same sport or activity. The only difference is we speak to different instructors, coaches or personal trainers. A member can become part of any community discourse anyway whether it’s getting a job, becoming involved in school functions, having a major or purpose in school. Being involved in your community is an awesome thing and even if we don’t realize it we all belong to one or another discourse community
