Immigration Reform, Rhetorical Analysis
Immigration, it is an extremely sensitive topic in modern politics. “Immigration reform has been the year’s most feared, least effective, most popular, and most hated legislative discussion in Washington” says Michelle Chen at the beginning of her article. It’s a very controversial topic has always given something to talk about, and in recent years the debate over this issue and a reform that will legalize millions of immigrants has heated up. There are many opinions when it comes to this issue and there are people and organizations on both sides that will do anything possible to defend their point of view. Like I mentioned opinions vary depending on who you talk to, the article that I will analyze does not choose a side or express a bias towards a specific group or organization, but rather helps us understand many of the questions that people have about immigration and gives important facts about what is currently going on in our country in regards to the issue of immigration. The article is informative and is sole purpose is to provide information. The analyzing of this article will enable us to professionally construct a valid point of view.
Audience/Purpose There are many, millions of column and article authors that write to defend a point. That use their skill of writing to take a side on a specific issue and either attack it or defend it. There are authors around the world and especially in the United States that will us their “power” or influence, the media has a lot influence on the minds and perspective of the citizens of a specific country, to make people believe something. Their writing will convince people to lean or take a side even if they know or initially knew that it was the wrong side to take. The article that I am in turn analyzing doesn’t do any of the previously mentioned actions, it does not take a side, attack, or defend the issue of immigration. Michelle Chen who is the author of this article does not persuade you to or motivate you to in any way shape or form take any action for the topic of immigration. In addition the article is written to teach us about all the different aspects of the immigration movements that are happening now a day in the Unites States. It does not blame any government agency or private organization for anything regarding the topic.
ETHOS1 In these informative article about the current hot topic of immigration we encounter an author that does an extremely great job of staying neutral to the topic and not leaning toward a side. Michelle Chen uses various facts and numbers to illustrate the current standing of an immigration reform in Washington. “Senate bill744 establishes clear preferences regarding the type of immigrant the United States should accept”. These types of arguments give her the author a strong sense of creditability, which makes it easier for the people that are reading her article to really understand what she wants to express. This helps her push her point across and with this she will gain more readers. The way the she writes her articles in a non-bias way is mainly the key to her having a good reputation. With topics like these that are especially hot at the moment it is very important that the authors watch how, and what they write. This is because if they make one mistake their whole career can go south meaning that it will practically be over. This is why these type of articles are extremely beneficial to the survival of their careers. She is knowledgeable of the topic and knows the facts and can argue her point.
PATHOS.
When speaking about the topic of immigration in the United States many people just think about one thing, and that is a reform. A reform that will legalize them, their friends, or even their family members. It is a dream that these people have, they wake up every day waiting for news about the topic and they wait with great expectancy that the day that a reform is passed comes soon. The author of this article you can say plays with the imagination of millions of people waiting for a reform. And the word playing is not to be taken into a negative context but in should be taken in the sense that the author Michelle uses many facts, and these facts are takes by those millions of people as an illusion, as a light at the end of the tunnel, as hope for their so called American dream. People read her article and get excited with the thought of a reform passing. The statistics show that the government is interested in bringing workers and smart young minds into the country which gives hope to a lot of people.
LOGOS
The author uses a very smart reasoning system that ensures that everyone has their voices heard and that no one is left out. She talks about all the issues that surround the topic of immigration and just lets everyone have their own opinion. That is a great way to make sure that she doesn’t get any negative remarks about her writing on the subject. No one is right or wrong everyone will be entitled to their opinion that is the beauty of this type of writing. This is great because the main intention of the author was to inform the public about the fact of the current topic.
CONCLUSION.
